Unplug Your Kids-Glass

This weeks Unplug Your Kids theme was Glass. First I had the boys look at some real stained glass that my dad had made a long time ago. They thought it was really cool. My original idea was to have them make their owned stained glass from crayon shavings on wax paper. However, I found this other project on dabbled.org where you could color plastic container lids and then shrink them in the oven. It looked really cool and it looked like stained glass, so I thought we'd give that a try. I don't know what I did wrong, but it didn't work at all. The plastic curled up in the oven, but never uncurled. The boys were really disappointed. I think we're going to have to make the crayon stained glass sometime this week.

Bummer that didn't work out. It is a really cool idea.

I have heard it has to be number 6 plastic - you find it in the triangle in the bottom of the product and as it shrinks you have to do very heavy colouring to make it bright...

cool idea though

The only thing I can think of is, was it the right number plastic? It has to be 6 or 7, I can't remember which. One works, the other doesn't.

I used #6 plastic, so I'm not sure what the issue was.

How disappointing for you. But the stained glass piece you looked at is so lovely.

Oh, just saw your comment about the plastic... maybe you didn't leave it in long enough, they do curl up but after a bit they usually uncurl... not sure tho.

That's too bad it didn't turn out. Nothing's as big of a bummer as a failed project. Better luck next time, huh? I'm thinking of teaching my kids to iron . . . what do you think? :)

Sorry it didn't work for you.
We have made them without melting them and found it fun.

That's too bad that your project didn't work out - but you get an A for effort!
